Getting Started in Yoga – A Few Simple Tips

iStock_000017591577LargeSeptember is National Yoga Month and Schuler Shoes is Celebrating Yoga to the Core with a shoe giveaway and the gift of yoga.  To help kick off our celebration, we are pleased to have Karen McGrath of CorePower Yoga guest blog this week and help us with a few tips on getting started in yoga.  THANK YOU KAREN AND THANK YOU COREPOWER YOGA!

Getting Started in Yoga

by Karen McGrath

Some of the most frequent questions I am asked at the studio are: “Is Yoga right for me?”  “What if I’m not good enough?” or “What if I’m not flexible?”  My response is always: No matter your age, strength, or flexibility level, CorePower Yoga has a yoga class to meet you, where your body is at today.

Don’t let yourself feel intimidated or overwhelmed by how you “should” look practicing yoga.  With an open mind and by following these simple tips, you’ll be well on your way to practicing a fun and rewarding new pastime.

What to wear/bring:

One of the great things about yoga is that it’s portable; it can be done anywhere at any time and with minimal equipment.  Most importantly, be sure to have a non-slip yoga mat, a bottle of water, and wear loose, breathable clothing.  If you sweat heavily, you may also like to have a towel on hand.  CorePower Yoga has a wide array of towels, mats, and yoga apparel for purchase.  We also have mats and towels for rent.  Visit your local studio and chat with an instructor about what products will work best for you.

Your first class:

For your first class, I suggest a personal experience guided by live instructor rather than a yoga DVD.  In addition to receiving a real sense of our CorePower community, this will give you an option to engage in conversation with your teacher about class.  CorePower Yoga offers “Intro to Power Yoga” classes every day of the week at various times – a great place to begin your practice.  Before class, alert your instructor of any injuries or limitations in your body; with this information, your instructor will be able to provide you with modifications or options to accommodate your needs throughout class.  On top of that, all new students who are local residents will receive 7 days of free, unlimited yoga to try out our studios.  We believe this time period allows new students an experience where they are able to explore different types of classes as well as instructors and receive a great sense of our CorePower culture.

Having Fun and Staying Positive

It’s called “practicing” yoga for a reason!  Don’t take yourself too seriously, and learn to let go of expectations you have of yourself or of class.  Everyone is a student of yoga and at their own unique place in their yoga journey – even your instructor!  Remain light-hearted throughout practice and don’t forget to smile and laugh at yourself a little. Life is beautiful!

In Light,

Karen McGrath
